Jeanne Peterson, Kendra Shymanski
When the garden was started:
The raised beds were built by the high school tech class in late April/early May 2011. They were assembled in a snow storm! The beds were planted with donated plants from Shutters Greenhouse in late May.
How the garden is used:
There is one short planting season is spring. Summer school kids watered and made stepping stones. First graders use the garden in fall for reading and writing activities.
Some of the students’ favorite garden activities:
The summer school students had the opportunity to taste kohlrabi (which they liked) and Swiss chard (they liked it raw but not cooked.) The first graders liked the cherry tomatoes in the fall, especially the yellow ones.
Current events in the garden:
This year’s garden is currently being planned. Grow lights will be used to start seeds early in the year and get a head start on planting.
